THE NEW BOSTON WHALER 230 DAUNTLESS IS DESIGNED FOR SERIOUS FUN. BY GEORGE SASS JR.
I’ve never been a fan of birthday parties. They’re just one more milestone that reminds me of how fast everything is moving today. Recently, however, I celebrated an old friend’s birthday that I wouldn’t have missed for anything. It was a celebration to mark half a century on this planet, that stirred memories of days gone by. Many of us spun tales of how this friend touched our lives, injected countless hours of fun, and above all, was a friend we could all collectively trust.
It’s a safe bet that many of you too will have memories of this old friend—Boston Whaler. The company recently hosted an event to mark 50 years of building the venerable and unsinkable line of boats ranging from 11 to 35 feet. It took the opportunity to debut several new models, including the 230 Dauntless, all of which maintain the quality that we’re accustomed to, as well as some fresh thinking that will ensure the company stays relevant for at least another 50 years. The 230 showcases new styling and builds upon the success of the now discontinued 220. One area the company seemed to dial in was the power package. Our test boat was equipped with a single 225 hp Mercury Verado that gave the 230 the necessary torque to power out of the hole. At 6100 rpm, we reached a top speed of 40.3 knots. She began to plane at around 3300 rpm in approximately six seconds. At 5000 rpm we achieved a cruise of approximately 33 knots. The 230 backed down and tracked true, and the helm felt responsive.
In my opinion, one of the areas that sets Boston Whaler apart is the attention to detail in the cockpit and surrounding areas. Our test boat featured the optional casting platform and water sports activity tower, which has storage for skis and wakeboards. Plus, it features two additional rod holders, a tow-eye, and a raised casting platform. This versatility will allow you to head out fishing in the morning and then take the kids wakeboarding in the afternoon. This duplicitous mission is evident throughout the 230.
The insulated 18-gallon livewell is forward of the console under the seat. An optional fish box can be installed under the transom seat. In view of the large amounts of locker storage, I would definitely go with this option, even if you’re a casual fisherman. Additional options that add to the 230’s fishability include a leaning post equipped with stainless steel rod holders, a bait prep area with a cutting board, a rigging station bin and a 94-quart cooler.
Anyone who has contorted like Gumby trying to service pumps and strainers on a smaller center console will appreciate the 230’s pump locker, accessible from the deck, aft of the helm seat. The lighted gelcoat-lined compartment makes routine inspections or service an easy task.
A double helm seat serves the console. The back rest flips forward to allow you to switch your orientation or watch the baits when needed. The engine gauges are placed in the line of sight in an insert on the console along with the breakers. Personally, I would like to see this reconfigured to allow for more surface area to install larger electronic displays at the console. In my opinion you can never have enough room for electronics. There are six rod holders along the forward console seat and the builder was tweaking the T-top option to allow these to be used properly. There is a portable MSD inside the console for the lady-folk.
The forward seating evolved from the 200 Dauntless and again, can serve double-duty for serious anglers or cruisers alike. Folding back rests provide forward facing seating on either side. I also like the fact that the lockers can be opened without having to unsnap the cushions. This may not sound like a big deal to some, but after going into the lockers numerous times a day to get various items; this little detail goes a long way in my book. There is lockable storage underneath the seats that could hold two to four outfits. A trolling motor option is available and accessible from the anchor locker. In addition, a pedestal mounted seat option is available for the bow area.
If you are in the market for a boat capable of multi-tasking for the active boating family, the Boston Whaler 230 Dauntless deserves a serious look. Boston Whaler, (800) Whaler-9; www.whaler.com.
